Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/Today

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

See Wikipedia:Categories for deletion policies for the official rules of this page, and how to do cleanup.

Deletion of a category may mean that the articles and images in it are directly put in its parent category, or that another subdivision of the parent category is made. If they are already members of more suitable categories, it may also mean that they become a member of one category less.

How to use this page

[edit]
  1. Know if the category you are looking at needs deleting (or to be created). If it is a "red link" and has no articles or subcategories, then it is already deleted (more likely, it was never really created in the first place), and does not need to be listed here.
  2. Read and understand Wikipedia:Categorization before using this page. Nominate categories that violate policies here, or are misspelled, mis-capitalized, redundant/need to be merged, not NPOV, small without potential for growth, or are generally bad ideas. (See also Wikipedia:Naming conventions and Wikipedia:Manual of Style.)
  3. Please read the Wikipedia:Categorization of people policy if nominating or voting on a people-related category.
  4. Unless the category to be deleted is non-controversial – vandalism or a duplicate, for example – please do not depopulate the category (remove the tags from articles) before the community has made a decision.
  5. Add {{cfd}} to the category page for deletion. (If you are recommending that the category be renamed, you may also add a note giving the suggested new name.) This will add a message to it, and also put the page you are nominating into Category:Categories for deletion. It's important to do this to help alert people who are watching or browsing the category.
    1. Alternately, use the rename template like this: {{cfr|newname}}
    2. If you are concerned with a stub category, make sure to inform the WikiProject Stub sorting
  6. Add new deletion candidates under the appropriate day near the top of this page.
    1. Alternatively, if the category is a candidate for speedy renaming (see Wikipedia:Category renaming), add it to the speedy category at the bottom.
  7. Make sure you add a colon (:) in the link to the category being listed, like [[:Category:Foo]]. This makes the category link a hard link which can be seen on the page (and avoids putting this page into the category you are nominating).
  8. Sign any listing or vote you make by typing ~~~~ after your text.
  9. Link both categories to delete and categories to merge into. Failure to do this will delay consideration of your suggestion.

Special notes

Some categories may be listed in Category:Categories for deletion but accidently not listed here.

NEW NOMINATIONS

[edit]

Palestinian territories

[edit]

Nominator's rationale: Follow-up to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 March 5#Palestinian territories. From "1940s in the Palestinian territories" onward, the rest of the list may also be deleted instead of renamed. The article about 1987 in the Israeli Civil Administration area was apparently moved from "Palestine" based on the argument that using "Palestine" for events before 1987 would be anachronistic. Deleting these categories would also be acceptable, as they are merely container categories. I'm fine with both options—either renaming the pre-1987 entries or deleting them altogether. Hassan697 (talk) 18:09, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

State of Palestine

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Follow-up to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 January 19#Palestine. Hassan697 (talk) 18:09, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Fiction set in the Holy Roman Empire by century

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: manually merge, redundant category layer with 1-2 subcategories each. Most subcategories are already in the tree of the targets, hence a manual merge is needed. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:51, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Greco-Roman world vs Classical antiquity

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: merge the top category, largely overlapping scope, both contain Category:Ancient Greece + Category:Ancient Rome as their key components. By all means keep a redirect. Also merge per WP:G4, we already merged it back in 2016. User:Fayenatic london and User:Jc37 participated in that discussion, User:Dimadick did the recreation, User:TSventon discovered the previous discussion. Rename the subcategories listed above, per Jc37's earlier point to remove the term "Greco-Roman" consistently. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:29, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm obviously not opposing this (lol) - But I'm wondering about Category:Greco-Roman ethnography. Do we need a descriptor word for "classical" for the ethnography one. Perhaps a word like era or period or history or some such? I'm asking because I don't want to see us here again because someone thought "classical" was ambiguous. Another option could be to follow the others and do something similar: "Category:Ethnography of classical antiquity" for them. (of, not in, because it is a study "of" the time, not a study taking place during the time.) But the thing is, when I read over ethnography and look at Category:Ethnography, I'm doubtful about whether that category should exist at all. It seems a hodge-podge of Greco-Roman-related things, including locations, which, as far as I can tell, shouldn't be there at all. I welcome others' thoughts on this. - jc37 18:27, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Venice stubs

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: It's a subcat of Veneto geography stubs, so that's why I believe "Venice geography stubs" is more accurate - OpalYosutebitotalk』 『articles I want to eat16:37, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Bigg Boss contestants

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Celebrity contestants fail WP:PERFCAT. --woodensuperman 15:35, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Words and phrases by language

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Please discuss at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2025_April_7#Category:Concepts_by_language. fgnievinski (talk) 13:58, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Television stations in the Wilkes-Barre–Scranton market

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Consistency with main article's name; don't want to use Nielsen market name Mvcg66b3r (talk) 12:51, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Vanuatuan female javelin throwers

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Only 1 entry. Also merge with Category:Vanuatuan female athletes. Category:Vanuatuan javelin throwers becomes redundant as she is the only notable Vanuatuan javelin thrower. LibStar (talk) 06:59, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Concepts by language

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: The cat has no description, but looking into its contents I gather it is intended for concepts named by non-English words. If this is so, then it must be deleted, because the language of the name of the concept is not a defining characteristic of a concept. Heck, 90% of concepts are in Greek or Latin :-) --Altenmann >talk 04:06, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Candidates in Ontario provincial election categories

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Unnecessary duplication of the word Ontario. It is already obvious that Ontario-specific parties would be the ones contesting Ontario provincial elections. RedBlueGreen93 03:02, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose (of kept, in view of Marcocapelle's comment below). We have the name of the party and the name of an event. And not at all obvious. The change may inadvertently suggest to look up whether Green Party (Austria) took part in these elections (an absurd example, of course, to make a point). --Altenmann >talk 04:36, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Argentine tropical physicians

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Only 1 entry, also merge with Category:Argentine physicians.

Also propose merging:

Category:1672 ships

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Per notice on category, consensus within Wikipedia:WikiProject Ships states that prior to 1740, ships should be categorized by decade. –Aidan721 (talk) 01:39, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Works set in prison

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Forms a category loop with Category:Fiction set in prison, and contains no articles. All the other subcategories are already in the other category. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 07:00, 2 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: The two categories were deleted (see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 March 27#Category:Prison healthcare in fiction and Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 March 27#Category:Fictional prisoners and detainees). What does that mean for these two categories?
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 01:01, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • As it currently stands, I do not see a reason to merge either way. Both the "in fiction" and the "works" category are populated properly with the sort of content that you would expect there. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:46, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I did a little cleanup - I added a couple see alsos (for example, a person, fictional or otherwise, is not a setting location); and moved the anime-manga one to works.
    So at this point, I agree. - jc37 19:03, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
